Rock What? The concept for this campaign came about in August of 2008 when we, as students in our Marketing class, were challenged to develop a team project. We wanted to do something unique and different, but we wanted to help people, our peers specifically. We started doing basic research to see what we could come up with. Some of the things we read surprised us and inspired us, so we decided to dig deeper and figure out what's going on with teenagers these days. We wanted to know what the problem was and we wanted to find a solution without sounding like another "after school special."
Turns out there are a number of problems teenagers face on a daily basis: depression, peer pressure, substance abuse, suicide, self-abuse, and violence. We're teenagers; our generation is caught in a period of time where we want to find ourselves and take on the world. With that comes a lot of questions and obstacles that we are not alone in facing. There are teenagers everywhere facing the same issues that each and every one of us may face everyday. We have to be able to connect to and trust one another to make those issues become nonexistent. If we can't trust each other, whom can we trust? We are not counselors, we are not teachers, we are not adults; we are teenagers just like you who have faced and overcome some of the same situations you have. You are not alone.
Rock What? Technically speaking, our generation is referred to as Generation Y. That seems a little boring of a label especially when referring to a generation that has snazzy things like Nintendo Wii, IPhones, IPods, and touch screen computers everywhere you go. Thanks in large part to basketball coach Tony Hardin, we've decided we're going to call ourselves the PlayStation Generation. With all this technology at our finger tips, it's time to put it to good use and do something great with it besides trying to find out who is dating whom in Hollywood and what shoes the girls on MTV's The Hills are wearing this week. Let's use this technology to create something great. A place where teenagers can connect with their peers and bond over our generation's most common and loved subject: music.
You might be rockin' out to Avenged Sevenfold, two steppin' to Lil' Wayne, kickin' it old school with Metallica, singin' with Carrie Underwood, dancin' to T-Pain, or just lisinin' to that new Fall Out Boy song on the radio. The reality is that music surrounds us every day. It's important to us. Music reflects our mood, our personality, our space in time…there's a song or a lyric for wherever we are in this thing called Life. But why is it that music reaches out to us in so many ways? "Music is the universal language, it is a means of communications when we cannot find the right words ourselves." Music is a release, an inspiration, a hobby, a love, a passion, and it connects us all in ways in which we are even unaware.
So even if music isn't your mojo there are tons of other ways to get involved and meet new people. Call us old fashioned, but we hear school or community activities and clubs are a great way to meet new people. We're not saying you need to conquer the world by playing every single sport known to man and placing first in every club activity you take part in, we're just saying get involved. Find something that represents you and run with it. Dance to your own beat and stay true to yourself. Life is what you make of it, so seize the day!
Rock What? So here's the bottom line: It's time to stand up for our generation. Let's prove to everyone that we can and are capable of being the generation to change the world. It's time to stop the abuse, the pain, the depression, and the negative vibe that others sometime have of our generation.
It's time to come together and help one another. Get inspired. Get motivated. Change.
Rock Your Life!!!
